What is Pilates?

Pilates refers to an exercise system designed to stretch, strengthen, tone and balance the body, mind and spirit.  The benefits of Pilates are numerous.  They include increased flexibility, increased strength, better coordination, improved posture, and a more positive body awareness.  Pilates allows for more efficient movement of the body in everyday activities.  As Pilates said himself, it "restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit".

Who was Joseph Pilates (1880-1967)?  The creator of the Pilates method of exercise was born in Germany.  As a sickly child, he made it his mission to improve his health through exercise.  He educated himself in gymnastics, martial arts, body building, yoga, and anatomy.  Growing into a healthy adult, he constantly strove to find the ideal balance of mind, body and spirit.
Who was Joseph Pilates (1880-1967)? , con't:
Prior to the outbreak of WWI, Pilates was working in England.  When war broke out, he was interned on the Isle of Man.  He tried to preserve both the mental and physical health of fellow prisoners by instructing them daily in his exercises.  For those too injured to leave their beds, Pilates rigged pulleys and springs to the beds to facilitate exercise.  These modified beds became the predecessors to the Cadillac and Universal Reformer used today.
Following the war, Pilates returned to Germany.  However, when asked to train the German secret police, he left the country for the United States.  He met his wife, Clara, on his voyage to the US.  Upon their arrival, they set up their first studio in New York City and began spreading the Pilates method.  His teachings are now known and taught as Classical Pilates.
